Leave a clear message

Whether you call, email, or complete an online form, briefly explain what help you need. Always include your next hearing date or deadline.

Example voicemail:

“Hello, my name is Bintu [last name]. I am looking for a lawyer to represent me at my final immigration court hearing on [date]. I speak [language]. Please call me at [phone number]. Again, my name is Bintu [last name], and my number is [phone number]. Thank you.”

Searching for a private lawyer on Google

You can also search Google for immigration lawyers in New York. Many law firms have an online form where you can briefly describe your case. Include your next hearing date or deadline and the language you speak.

Some lawyers offer a free first consultation; others charge a fee. Ask before booking.

If possible, speak with several lawyers before choosing one. A consultation gives you a chance to ask:

  • Have you handled cases like mine?

  • Can you take my case before my next hearing or deadline?

  • What is the total fee, and are payment plans available?

  • Which services are included, and what costs extra?

  • Who will work on my case and answer my questions?

Choose someone who explains things clearly and whom you feel comfortable speaking with. Before hiring a lawyer, ask for a written agreement explaining the services and fees.

Is someone detained by ICE?

Some lawyers handle habeas corpus cases involving immigration detention. Not every immigration lawyer handles these cases. Ask specifically about relevant experience, availability, and fees.
