Understanding how the immigration system works is essential — especially for those facing final removal orders

Below, we outline the different roles of the Executive and Judicial branches within the U.S. immigration system, including how decisions are reviewed and challenged.

We also explain where Habeas Corpus petitions may be filed for individuals detained by ICE, and how federal courts can intervene in certain cases.

This overview will help you better understand your legal options.

How to Locate Someone Detained by ICE

Cómo localizar a una persona detenida por ICE / Comment localiser une personne détenue par ICE

If a loved one has been detained, you can search for them using ICE’s official online detainee locator.

If your case is in Immigration Court, remember this important step

If you send any document to the Immigration Judge (updates to your application, evidence, motions, or letters),
you must also send a copy to ICE (the government’s attorney / OPLA) and include a Certificate of Service.

📌 Not doing this can cause delays or problems with your case.
