RIF Asylum Support

Transforming complex immigration policies into clear, actionable steps for asylum seekers

Our Mission

RIF Asylum Support provides a critical lifeline to asylum seekers and vulnerable immigrants facing an increasingly complex and unforgiving U.S. immigration system.

Serving communities across all five boroughs of New York City, we welcome everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or background. We bridge the urgent gap in access to legal guidance, reliable information, and emotional support, helping individuals protect their rights, navigate life-altering decisions, and avoid devastating consequences when they have nowhere else to turn.

Our Programs

At RIF, we believe no one should have to navigate the immigration system alone. Here is what we do to achieve this goal:

1. Legal Guidance

For asylum seekers navigating the immigration system without an attorney, understanding legal procedures, deadlines, and available options can make a life-changing difference.

RIF provides ongoing rapid legal consultations (free weekly virtual legal consultations and monthly in-person meetings in Manhattan), connecting asylum seekers with experienced immigration attorneys with asylum seekers without legal representation to guide them through extremely complex procedures which not understood, can lead to potential deportations and/or detentions  (who answer questions, explain procedures, and help individuals identify their next steps). These consultations are weekly and monthly.

While rooted in New York City, our virtual consultations allow us to reach asylum seekers across the country who need reliable legal guidance.

2. Immigration Education & Information: Immigration information is power and empowerment

Immigration policies are constantly changing, making reliable and accessible information more important than ever.

Through our monthly Immigration Policy Updates webinars, RIF helps service providers, community advocates, and activists better understand immigration policies so they can support the communities they serve.

Our multilingual RIF Explainer newsletter, social media platforms, self-help website, and educational YouTube videos extend this work, sharing practical information in English, Spanish, and French with thousands of people.

3. Emotional Support & Individual Immigration Navigation

Navigating the immigration system can be confusing, stressful, and isolating, especially without legal representation.

Through individualized immigration navigation and emotional support, RIF helps asylum seekers better understand their cases, prepare questions for attorneys, access resources, and navigate the challenges of building a new life in New York City.

Our volunteer Legal Navigators and immigration social worker provide additional one-on-one guidance, while our Emotional Support Group offers a welcoming space for connection and mutual support.  A dynamic mutual-support WhatsApp group for asylum seekers provides advice and shared experiences.

Our Impact

RIF supports approximately 50–60 people each month, representing an estimated 600–720 instances of support annually, through our legal consultations, in-person meetings, and individualized services.

Many participants return regularly, building lasting relationships and a strong community of trust and support.

Our educational outreach also reaches thousands beyond our direct programs, with over 13,000 YouTube subscribers and more than 6,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok.

Behind this work is a dedicated team of staff, volunteer legal navigators, attorneys, interpreters, and emotional support professionals.

At RIF, we believe no one should have to navigate the immigration system alone.
