Find a Free Immigration Lawyer

What is a pro bono lawyer?

“Pro bono” means the lawyer does not charge for legal services. Free immigration representation may be provided by nonprofit organizations or private lawyers volunteering their time.

Demand is high, and organizations cannot accept every case. Each provider has its own requirements and may have a waiting list. Ask whether any other costs apply, such as application fees.

How to ask for help

How to ask for help

Check the organization’s instructions before contacting them. You may need to call during specific hours, send an email, or complete an online form.

Briefly explain:

  • Your name.

  • What kind of immigration help you need.

  • Your next hearing date or deadline, if you have one.

  • The language you speak.

  • Your phone number.

Example voicemail:

“Hello, my name is Carlos [last name]. I am from Venezuela and need a lawyer to represent me in my asylum case. I have a Master Calendar Hearing on [date]. I speak Spanish. Please call me at [phone number]. Again, my name is Carlos [last name], and my number is [phone number]. Thank you.”

Speak slowly and repeat your name and phone number clearly. A message that only says “I need a lawyer—call me back” may not give the organization enough information.

What if nobody replies?

Follow the organization’s instructions about calling again. If no instructions are provided, you can follow up after a few business days.

Contact several organizations while you wait. Keep a simple record of whom you contacted, when, and any response. A clear message helps explain your needs, but does not guarantee an appointment or representation.
