What is the difference between an asylum seeker and a resettled refugee?
There is often confusion about the difference between asylum seekers and refugees who enter the U.S. through the resettlement process. While both are fleeing persecution in their home countries, they seek refugee through two very different processes (see animated video and graphic below).
Our aim is to show how little support asylum seekers receive when they arrive in New York. RIF will continue to advocate for better orientation services for asylum seekers so they have a chance to build a safer life.
But we also want to convey our deepest solidarity and friendship with all those working with refugees & immigrants in NYC. All of us are in the same boat under attack by the current administration. The U.S. refugee resettlement program is being dismantled, DACA is dead, the Sanctuary Movement is being targeted, and hostile policies are put in place to discourage asylum claims.
